ESG is pleased to kick off 2012 with a new video series titled Behind the Findings where we will discuss research highlights and conclusions as we publish our research reports. This is a new offering for ESG Research Subscription clients to view at your convenience, on-demand.

In this first edition of ESG’s Behind the Findings program, Jon Oltsik, Principal Analyst and author of the ESG Research Report, U.S. Advanced Persistent Threat Analysis, offers his analysis based upon the results of his recent survey of 244 security professionals.

Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are defined as targeted multi-vector attacks usually initiated by a sophisticated and well-resourced adversary. APTs are typically used as a means for discovering and stealing sensitive data. ESG is now in a position to better understand end-users’ familiarity with and opinions about APTs.

Video Blog Wrap-Up from EMC World

EMC World 2011 concluded for all intents and purposes on Wednesday evening with a customer appreciation event. It was an exhausting four days for me, but I did hear some very good things and heard a vision for the BRS Division from Stephen Manley, CTO. Many of the customers I spoke to wanted simplicity, not silos of solutions and the ones I spoke with definitely saw Avamar and Networker as silos, saying they didn’t want to bring yet another interface to manage into their ecosystem. What Stephen Manley talked about in his keynote with BJ Jenkins, President of EMC BRS Division, was directly to that point. While he didn’t provide a timeline, he did allude to the idea of Avamar and Networker coming closer together. To illustrate this, he showed two ellipses that were overlapping each other by about 99%, leaving just enough space on either end to fit an “A” and an “N,” representing both solutions and in an effort to say there will be a single interface in the future (?)–perhaps–that’s what I took away from the discussion.

Here’s my final EMCworld video blog–I couldn’t get any customers to agree to be on camera with me–quite understandable with legalities, etc. I apologize for the lack of enthusiasm–I was tired and had just walked what seemed like 15 miles from the convention hall back to my hotel room. It was a great week and I got to see Joe Tucci play rhythm guitar with the Barn Dogs. ”Joe’s cool factor just increased 10-fold”–anonymous customer comment at the event.
