During the first half of 2008, ESG surveyed 1,000 senior-level business and IT decision makers regarding their organization’s “green” business strategies and associated IT plans. The goal of the survey was to identify the extent to which environmental sustainability or “green” business and IT initiatives are priorities for organizations around the world. The report focuses on analysis of those portions of the survey data that were designed to answer the following types of questions:
  • At a business level, what types of green initiatives are viewed as most important to the long-term sustainability and success of the organization?
  • What impact will an organization’s commitment to green initiatives have on their customers’ decisions to do business with that organization over the next five years?
  • What types of green business and IT activities are currently underway or planned for the next several years?
  • How concerned are organizations with IT-related environmental issues?
  • Which computing and information technologies are being deployed to enable both green business and green IT programs?
  • With respect to data center power and cooling initiatives in particular, which infrastructure technologies are viewed as most critical to the success of these efforts?
  • What types of trade-offs are organizations willing to make in terms of cost, performance, and control in order to reduce data center power and cooling consumption?
  • To what extent are IT environmental operating costs—such as power, cooling, floor space, and recycling requirements—explicitly factored into the budgeting and approval process for IT projects or IT-dependent business initiatives?
  • What metrics are used to evaluate IT’s contribution to the success of the organization’s green initiatives?
  • How successful have IT organizations been in achieving their green goals?
  • ... and much more!
